STANFORD, Calif. — With windy conditions, the Stanford Golf Course proved to play extremely tough as the Saint Mary’s golf team struggled in the first round of The Goodwin.
The Gaels are in a four way tie for 15th after scoring 18-over 298 in round one.
Tournament host, Stanford, is the only team in the field under par, as the Cardinal sit atop the leaderboard at 4-under. Washington is seven strokes behind Stanford at 3-over. SMU is in third place at 4-over par, while No. 1 USC is in fourth at 5-over. BYU rounds out the top-5 at 8-over par.
Junior Pavan Sagoo is the Gaels low scorer of the day with a 2-over 72 finish. Sagoo shot even in the front nine, but a 2-over 37 in the back nine of the course. Sagoo is tied-27th in the field of 122 players.
Perry Cohen and Connor Blick are the two Gaels who also sit inside the top-50 of the leaderboard. Both players shot a first round 74 for a 4-over finish. After opening the round with four bogeys, Cohen scored two birdies in his last nine holes, taking advantage of the par 5’s.
