GOLF | Gaels Just Two Strokes off the Lead at Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah. — After the opening 36 holes, Saint Mary’s golf sits in solid position as the Gaels shot 9-under to place tied for third in the first day of the Ping Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club.

The site of the 2017 West Coast Conference Championship, SMC and its conference counterparts are getting a prime tuneup ahead of the championship which begins on April 20.

With 11 teams in the field, host BYU is atop the leaderboard at 11-under while Utah is just one stroke back at 10-under par. The Gaels and LMU are tied in third at 9-under, as Santa Clara rounds out the top-5 at 3-under through 36 holes.

Pavan Sagoo and Perry Cohen lead the Gaels as both are tied for fifth at 4-under.

Sagoo scored seven birdies on his scorecard, with five of them coming in the back nine of the course. The junior got the first round started strong. After bogeying his second hole, Sagoo birdied on four his next five holes. He would go bogey free the rest of the round to shoot 68.  

Sagoo would play consistent golf in the second round, scoring birdies on holes 9 and 13 for the even-par 72.

Cohen would follow up his strong showing at last week’s The Goodwin with a solid start at Riverside Country Club. The junior out of San Diego scored five birdies in his first round, but double-bogeyed his final hole of the round.

Starting the second round at 1-under, Cohen would finish round 2 with four birdies and a single bogey for the 3-under 69.

Senior Hunter Rappleye is tied-15th in the 65-player field, scoring 72-70 in the opening day. At even-par after the first round, Rappleye would go on a fury in the opening nine of the second round. The senior would birdie holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 to shoot the back nine 3-under. Rappleye would score three bogeys, but finished the day on a high note with a birdie-4 on hole 7.

Playing as an individual, Blake Hathcoat displayed consistent golf in his fifth appearance of the season. Hathcoat carded rounds of 72-73 (+1) to placed tied-26th on the leaderboard. The freshman is currently third among the 10 individuals.

Connor Blick and Roman Aragon are all inside the top-35. Blick is just 3-over on the day after shooting 72-75. Aragon is tied-29th after shooting 73-73 (+2) in the first 36 holes of the tournament.

The final round will be played tomorrow, as Saint Mary’s will tee off at 9:20 a.m. PT off the first tee. Live scoring can be found here via GolfStat. The Gaels will be paired alongside BYU and the Utes of Utah.
