Waco, TX – In the final round, the Saint Mary’s golf team posted a 7-under par round of 277 on Tuesday from the par-71 Royal Oaks Country Club. The Gaels posted rounds of 317-316-277-910 (+58) to finish in 12th place overall. Three of the five players for SMC posted rounds under par, as Robert McRae led the way with the low round of the tournament, with a 5-under par 66 to post his third top-20 finish of the season.
After rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday, McRae posted his low round of the season with a 66 on Tuesday. McRae’s round included six birdies and just one bogey. He got to 4-under par through 10 holes, before dropping a stroke on the 12th hole. He had birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to cap the low-round of the Baylor Invitational.
Brett Mormann recovered from two rounds in the 80s on Monday for a 2-under par 69 on Tuesday. Mormann had an up and down round making seven birdies and five bogeys. He made the turn at 2-under with three birdies and one bogey, but dropped to even par through 11 holes. He then made three straight birdies and his only par on the 15th hole to get to 3-under with three holes to play. After bogeys on 16 and 17, Mormann birdied his final hole to close the round with a 69.
Also posting a round in red figures was freshman Tim Honeycutt. Honeycutt shot 70 (-1) on Tuesday and finished the tournament tied for 32nd overall. After rounds of 76 and 79 on Monday, Honeycutt posted four birdies and three bogeys on Tuesday to post is lowest round in three tournaments at SMC. Honeycutt shot 225 (+12) in the Baylor Invitational.
Fellow freshman Jeff Petroff rounded out the Gaels’ scoring on Tuesday with a 1-over par 72. Petroff played a consistent final round that included two birdies and three bogeys. Daniel Cone rounded out the Gaels’ play on Tuesday as he posted a final round 77 (+6) after rounds of 83 and 82 on Monday.
No. 31 ranked Texas A&M, which shot a 54-hole score of 870 (+18), held onto its day-one lead and posted a two-shot victory over Oklahoma and No. 24 Lamar. No. 5 Arkansas shot 873 (+21) and No. 10 Baylor finished fifth with a score of 875 (+23).
Saint Mary’s will return to action on Sunday, November 9 when the Gaels participate in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. The 54-hole, three-day tournament will be played at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu, HI.
