MORAGA, Calif. — In a back-and-forth battle, Nash Vollenweider provided the spark needed to clinch a hard fought 4-2 win over Gonzaga (6-10, 0-6 WCC) at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex Friday afternoon.

Saint Mary’s (7-14, 2-5 WCC) won its second West Coast Conference match of the season with high energy, and great mental toughness.

After trailing 1-0 heading into the singles action, the Gaels bounced back nicely with wins on courts 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Vollenweider secured the win for SMC with a three-setter on court 3. The junior native of Australia showed grit and toughness in his match, winning by the score of, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

“Nash played an incredible mentally tough third set,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Greg Kennett. “The whole team was rooting for him and we are all so proud of his performance.”

Damon Kesaris continued to play his solid tennis, grinding through for a three-set victory over Ruadhan O’ Sullivan, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

“Today was the usual solid by Kesaris,” said Kennett. “Extremely proud of him and the way he continues to play for us.”

In his second to last home match for the Gaels, senior Manuel De Luis Lamelas delivered another impressive performance. The veteran claimed a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 win over Ronzai Saurombe.

Junior Jacob Lagman was also at a high level, recording his sixth singles win of the dual season. Lagman is now 2-2 on court 5 after winning today’s match 6-2, 6-4.

Saint Mary’s will host Senior Day tomorrow versus No. 41 Portland. The Gaels will honor senior Manuel De Luis Lamelas at 1:50 p.m. with a pre-match ceremony. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
