MORAGA, Calif. — On the first day of the spring season, the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team displayed dominance, as the team defeated American River CC, 6-1, and Sonoma State, 7-0 at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex earlier today.
“It was a fun day of tennis,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Greg Kennett. “We played two good teams, our guys showed great determination and strength. We’ve been talking a lot about focus in practice and I thought the guys played with a really good, positive mind-set.”
In the morning action versus the Beavers, SMC rolled with all three wins in doubles action. Nash Vollenweider and Jacob Lagman got the day started right with a 6-3 win. Calvin Jordaan and Brian Lee were on court 2, and the duo worked well together en route to the 6-4 victory to claim the doubles point for SMC.
Seeing his first action as a Gael, Matis Bot teamed with Manuel de Luis Lamelas for a 6-4 win on court 3 of doubles play.
“Particularly glad to see Calvin and Matis, two of our three new players get good wins in both singles and doubles,” said Kennett.
The Gaels maintained their momentum going into singles play, winning five of the six matches. Lamelas opened up the streak of wins on court 2, as the Gael claimed a straight-set, 6-4, 6-3 win over Cody Duong. Vollenweider dropped the first set in his match on court 1, but came back for the come-from-behind win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The afternoon contest against Sonoma State was no different for SMC, as the Gaels defeated the Sea Wolves without a blemish.
Saint Mary’s again claimed the doubles point to kick-off the scoring. Playing on court 2, Bot and Lagman paired together and delivered a 6-4 win. Court 3 was crowned by Lamelas and Jackson Hawk, as the duo won in convincing fashion, 6-2.
SMC claimed win all six singles contests. Lamelas was the first Gael to get off the courts with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win. On court 5, junior Matthew Campana rolled to victory by the score of 6-1, 6-4.
