SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Headlined with a total of seven wins, the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team strung together a solid first day at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Friday.

Competing in a small field which includes competitors from San Jose State, Nevada and Santa Clara, the Gaels proved to be a force in both doubles and singles action.

In the morning at Degheri Tennis Center, SMC claimed a pair of dominant doubles victories. The pairing of Jana McCord and Danielle McIntyre continued to roll in the fall season after putting together an 8-4 win over Nabila Farah and Zeina El Tawil of Santa Clara.

Kareena Manji and Vanessa Nommensen also got on the win column after their own 8-4 win over Caitlyn Frenkel and Elizabeth Stephens of SCU. The duo of Jacqueline Pelletier and Parminder Kaur hung tight, but eventually fell, 8-5 to Danielle Silva and Madison Clarke of the Broncos.

The win streak continued in singles action, as the Gaels showed mental toughness in several close matches. McIntyre flashed great composure in today’s victory, as the first year player edged Marine Dans of San Jose State, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1. Kaur showcased her experience on the court in today’s victory, as the senior recorded a close, 6-4, 7-6(8) victory.

“Nearly a perfect day results wise,” said Saint Mary’s associate head coach Simon Harston. “The more impressive aspect was the nature of the wins, especially in singles.”

Manji dominated in a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gaelle Rey of SJSU. In another victory over a Spartan, Pelletier battled her way to a tough 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Tamara Culibrk. The team’s final victory of the day, Nommensen recorded her own straight-set, 6-0, 6-4 victory to end the day of competition.

“We came through some really tough matches and situations that required lots of mental strength,” stated Harston. “We are really excited for tomorrow.”

The second day of the Bronco Invitational will take place tomorrow at approximately 9 a.m. For the latest draws, fans can go to the USTA tournament website.
