MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team forced tough matches Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell in a competitive day to No. 7 Vanderbilt, 6-1.

The Gaels nearly captured the doubles point, but just couldn’t quite catch the break. The top pair of Emma Critser and Danielle McIntyre dropped the match on court 1, but Jana McCord and Kareena Manji battled in a back-and-forth match on court 2. The duo just missed tying the match, as Vandy captured the match, 7-5, for the double point.

Clementine Clement captured her second straight singles win in the third position, as the sophomore claimed the three-set victory.

“I thought we played really hard and well today,” said Saint Mary’s associate head coach Simon Harston. “We are really proud of the team’s performance today. Very unlucky not to win the doubles point and we were competitive in all singles matches.”

Senior Jana McCord nearly forced a third set in her match on court 1, as the San Diego native hit precise shots and attacked with winners. McCord eventually fell in just a few points for the 6-3, 7-5 loss.

McIntyre played well, hitting the majority of her first serves to transition into quick winners. The first year player continues to gain valuable experience and big time points despite today’s loss on court 4.

Manji and Critser each played well on the remaining two courts but fell just shy in forcing the deciding third sets.

The Gaels will return to action Friday, March 3 versus San Jose State. SMC will play at SJSU with the first serve scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
