BERKELEY, Calif. — On an action-packed final day of the Cal Winter Invite, Saint Mary’s once again displayed top-notch performances in doubles action, while Vanessa Nommensen captured the lone singles win for the Gaels.
Competing against the talented roster of Cal, SMC battled in tight matches during singles play. Facing the 49th ranked player in the country, senior Jana McCord went toe-to-toe with Maegan Manasse of Cal. McCord hung tough, but the two break-points were the difference as McCord dropped a narrow 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Nommensen engaged in a three-set match with Cal’s Audrey Mayer. After dropping the first-set 6-4, Nommensen found her game on the court to win the next two sets and the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles matches continued to go the Gaels way, as SMC claimed two out of three doubles wins. McCord and Parminder Kaur teamed together for the narrow, gritty win against Fresno State’s tandem of Triebe and Noble, 7-6(5).
Clementine Clement and Emma Critser rounded out the day for the Gaels with a solid performance on the court. The tandem displayed great energy and teamwork during the match, securing the 6-4 win for SMC.
Saint Mary’s will return to the hardcourts on Wednesday, Jan. 25, as the team will host Sacramento State at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
