MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team (2-4) displayed complete dominance in today’s action versus Fresno State as the Gaels nearly swept the Bulldogs, 6-1.
The day’s action started off in a fury for the Gaels, as Emma Critser and Danielle McIntyre collected their third win of the dual season as the top doubles team for the Gaels. Critser and McIntyre displayed great teamwork and excellent play all throughout the match to claim the 6-2 victory.
Senior Jana McCord and junior Kareena Manji also secured their third win of the spring season together on court 2, as the tandem are on a current three match win streak after today’s 6-3 win to help the Gaels claim the doubles point.
SMC carried over the momentum into singles action, winning on five of the six courts.
“The whole team was excellent today,” said associate head coach Simon Harston. “To put in that level of performance after a tough loss to UC Santa Barbara was a testament to their character. We talked a lot this past week about competitive attitude, and we can really see it in the players at the important moments of their matches.”
Senior Parminder Kaur claimed the quick win on court 6 to give the Gaels the early 2-0 advantage. McCord quickly followed suit with a one-sided 6-1, 6-1 win as the top singles player for SMC.
Clementine Clement claimed the match point for the Gaels on court 3, as she collected her first singles victory of the dual season with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
The Gaels will return back to Timothy Korth Tennis Complex for a highly anticipated match against nationally-ranked Vanderbilt.
“Vanderbilt is a great team and we are really looking forward to the match,” said Harston. “It is another chance to learn and develop as players and as a team. We will definitely need the same level of focus and determination as we had today.”
SMC will host Vanderbilt Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
