SAN JOSE, Calif. — In its lone match of the week, the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team overcame early adversity to pull through with a 4-2 win over San Jose State (4-4) Friday afternoon at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.
The Gaels now sit with an overall record of 3-5 and collected their first road win of the dual season.
Saint Mary’s tied the doubles matches after Clementine Clement and Jacqueline Pelletier produced the 6-3 win on court 3 for SMC. Tied 1-1, the top duo of Emma Critser and Danielle McIntyre were dead-locked in a tight battle. Critser and McIntyre ultimately dropped the 7-5 decision as the Spartans gained the early 1-0 advantage.
Singles action proved to be the story of the day, as the Gaels claimed top notch wins on four of the six singles courts.
“We bounced back from a disappointing doubles point, so I am very proud of the fight from the team,” said Saint Mary’s associate head coach Simon Harston. “The attitude in singles was great, led by our seniors.”
Senior Jana McCord won a thrilling three-setter as the top singles player for Saint Mary’s. McCord trailed a set, but bounced back with tough points in the second and third sets to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"Jana came back from 1-4 in the final set and just willed her way to the clinching win," said Harston.
Parminder Kaur also gained an impressive win, as the senior is now on a four-match win streak in singles competition. Playing in the sixth slot for SMC, Kaur dominated her opponent, 6-4, 6-0.
Clement and Kareena Manji were the other two victors to seal the win for SMC. Clement now moves to 3-1 as the No. 3 player on the season after today’s straight-set victory. Manji moved up to play on court 4, and won a 7-6, 6-3 decision.
The Gaels will head back to the courts for a four-match home stand starting with UC Davis Sunday, March 12 at 12 p.m. The match will be held at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
