Moraga, CA – With the Saint Mary’s baseball season complete, the Gael faithful can turn their attention to some former greats who are having great success at the next level. Most notably former infielder Bryan Byrne was recently called up to the Reno Aces the Triple-A team for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Bryne, who was drafted after his final season at the Guisto in 2005, began the year with the Mobile Bay-Bears in the double-A Southern League; while he was there he was hitting .279 with a homerun and 15 RBI. Last season he led the Bay-Bears with a .303 average, 27 doubles, 66 walks and a .405 on base percentage. Byrne got the call-up to the Aces on May 6.
Sean Gleason also got an early mid-season call up. Gleason began the season on the Fredrick Keys in single A in the Carolina Leagues. On April 18th he was promoted to the Bowie Baysox which is part of the double-A Eastern League.
Matt Yourkin is off to a great start playing for the Connecticut Defenders, the double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants in the Eastern League. In ten games played he has 2-1 record with a 1.93 ERA.
Corey Madden started the year on the disabled list but is playing for the Jupiter Hammerheads in the High-A Florida State League. Last season in a brief stint with the Hammerheads Madden posted a 1-0 record, with a 0.79 ERA in eight games.
Joel Staples is beginning his first full season in the minors playing for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in Class-A South Atlantic League. In 21 games played he is hitting .212 going 14-for-66, scoring nine runs, one triple, with nine driven in.
