MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s baseball team never let its guard down Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field as a grand slam from Edward Haus propelled the Gaels to their fourth straight win, 8-6 over Grand Canyon to clinch a series win over the Lopes.
Saint Mary’s faced the same adversity it saw in game one, but responded accordingly when it mattered most.
“It’s a good team win,” head coach Eric Valenzuela said. “I was proud of our guys for not panicking and playing all nine innings. There was a lot of game left. We were able to play to the scoreboard and go one pitch at a time, so it was a great win.”
Haus went 1 for 4, but his seventh-inning grand slam pushed the Gaels ahead for good to give a tough Saint Mary’s team its first series win of the young season.
“We did a great job of not panicking,” Haus said. “Timely hitting helped us get the win today… teams know they’re going to be in a dogfight whenever they come to Moraga. We just need to play within ourselves and we’ll be fighting to the very end.”
The Gaels’ talented freshmen class had its say in the win as well, as Joe Vranesh fought for a walk ahead of Haus’ go-ahead slam and Kevin Milam recorded his fourth save of the year. Milam also went 2 for 3 with a double and a solo home run in the fourth, one of seven extra-base hits for the Gaels.
“It’s great having all those contributions,” the rookie said. “We feel like we can hurt anybody in any part of our lineup. It’s nice to have people who have your back when you’re not having your best day.”
Brett Rasso and Joey Fiske each went 2 for 5 at the top of the order as Rasso recorded two RBI doubles. His second came in the eighth inning and scored Fiske to give the Gaels a much-needed insurance run.
The series concludes Sunday as the Gaels go for the sweep with a 1 p.m. start time. Tickets are available for purchase on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx.
