SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose State rallied in the bottom of the eighth Tuesday, just as the Saint Mary’s baseball team did against them last Tuesday, as the Spartans took a 6-5 non-conference win over the Gaels at Municipal Stadium.
The Spartans (14-24-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth – both with two outs – to beat the Gaels (26-14). SJSU drew four walks in the inning with three of them coming after the second out was recorded. The Gaels allowed the tying run to score on a passed ball and the go-ahead run to score on a bases-loaded walk.
Saint Mary’s (27-13) jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Spartans by the fourth inning after scoring two runs in the second and three in the fourth. They fought off a San Jose State rally in the seventh to keep a 5-4 lead after SJSU put runners on the corners with one out.
Brett Rasso’s two-out, two-RBI double in the fourth was the difference for most of the game. It gave the Gaels a 5-1 advantage at the time, keeping them ahead when SJSU’s Shane Timmons hit a two-out, three-run home run in the fifth to make it 5-4.
Saint Mary’s used seven pitchers in the game, led by starter Ty Madrigal (4-3). Madrigal threw two innings of no-hit, shutout ball, striking out four and only walking one. Bryce Reichmann, Ken Waldichuk and Vince Braman also threw shutout frames.
Saint Mary’s next travels to Gonzaga for a three-game West Coast Conference series starting Friday. All three games will be streamed live on the Gaels’ GaelVision Gameday Central page.
