Saint Mary’s center Evan Fitzner

Q: On his hot start to begin the game...
Fitzner: “It felt good. It’s not about me though, I just want to play my role and do whatever I can to help the team win at the end of the day.”

Q: On the team’s bench...
Fitzner: “I think it’s big going forward. Teams are starting to queue on Jock [Landale] and do everything they can to stop him so if someone else can step up it’s big for us. We just have to keep getting him the ball because it opens up a lot of stuff for us.”

Q: On playing at BYU on Saturday...
Fitzner: “It’s always tough going there and playing. We have to start locking in on that game and forget this last game.”

Q: On tonight’s game versus last game against Gonzaga...
Fitzner: “I think we played a little better offensively tonight. I think we also had better energy going into the game. They’re two very different teams, LMU likes to speed us up and press and trap. I think our guards did a really good job reacting to that and taking care of the ball.”

Q: On the team’s ability to bounce back from their recent loss...
Fitzner: “I think a lot of that is because we have a lot of guys that went through it last year and gone through it this year. I think it’s a testament to how close we are as a team, a lot of times when teams lose to a team like that they separate but we get closer together.”

Saint Mary’s center Jock Landale

Q: On the starters’ lessened playing time tonight...
Landale: “We earned ourselves that break tonight, we thought. It is a little weird coming out of the game that quickly.”

Q: On Evan Fitzner’s performance...
Landale: “Fitz is an awesome shooter. We know he can play offense really well. It’s always been a thing with this team where you never know and have a good night. We know every player on our team can score and tonight it was Fitz.”

Q: On the team’s bench performance...
Landale: “I think that’s a result of good offense and good teamwork. We got some stops so it gave us a lot more possessions. Our bench is great and we always know they can score and tonight they showed that off a little bit.”

Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett

Q: On the team’s play tonight...
Bennett: “I think we played well. I didn’t see that game going that way. I was pretty focused on that it was going to be a tough game, tight game and we were able to separate early and we needed that. We did a good job of taking care of the ball.”

Q: On Evan Fitzner’s performance...
Bennett: “He’s been playing pretty well offensively. He hasn’t been getting big minutes but I think some guys are starting to gain some confidence. I thought [Evan] Fitzner played well, I thought Tanner Krebs played well, Kyle Clark. [Jordan] Ford played well when he played. I think it’s a big key to this team. Those guys have to keep getting better because it makes us better. Fitzner is a good scorer. It’s kind of taken ‘til now to get his confidence level back to where it was last year as far as offensively.”

Q: On today’s play heading into the postseason...
Bennett: “It’s just what the doctor ordered. We need an ability to separate from teams. We’ve been able to do it by locking them out defensively but tonight we did it offensively too.”

Q: On facing BYU on Saturday...
Bennett: “Very tough place to play and a good team. It’s one of those atmospheres that’s tough and I just told our guys that. It’ll be a great challenge for us, I’m excited to go there and play against those guys and see what we can do.”

Q: On thinking forward to the NCAA tournament...
Bennett: “It’s in the back of your mind, it’s there. Anybody who says it’s not there is crazy. I know the only thing we can control is the next game so we try and stay right there with their team. This was a good step tonight, winning this game was a good step.”
