After the timeout, the Toreros held the Gaels scoreless for four minutes, but were only able to score two points during that stretch. SMC hit six of its first seven shot, before missing on its next four during the drought.

USD finally reached the 10-point mark for the game when De’Jon Jackson hit a three with six minutes left in the half. Samhan then hit back-to-back buckets to extend the Gaels’ lead to 27-10 with four minutes until the intermission.
Saint Mary’s extended its lead to 20-points when Clint Steindl hit a 3-pointer with 2:32 on the clock, giving SMC a 30-10 lead. The SMC advantage was 32-14 at halftime. Saint Mary’s shot 59 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while holding the Toreros to 24 percent, as USD connected on just 6-of-25 shots.
Saint Mary’s opened the second half like the first with a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 41-17 with 16 minutes left on the clock following a three by Hughes. San Diego cut SMC’s lead to 17 points with three minutes left to play, when Clinton Houston made a lay-up.
