MORAGA, Calif. — Megan McKay boasted a career-high 25 points and tied a career high with 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, but Boise State pulled away in the fourth quarter for an 83-78 victory over the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team on the first day of the Hilton Concord Classic at McKeon Pavilion.
McKay went 11 for 14 from the floor and made three free throws to top her previous career high of 18 points. Eight of McKay’s 12 rebounds were on the offensive end as Saint Mary’s (2-3) outrebounded Boise State (4-0) 21-9 on the offensive glass and 44-30 overall. SMC has outrebounded its opponent in every game this season.
The Gaels had four players score in double figures and nearly had two other double-doubles. Stella Beck scored 15 points and had a career-high nine assists. Sydney Raggio posted her third straight double-figure scoring game with 14 points and eight rebounds. Devyn Galland added 10 points.
Brooke Pahukoa led Boise State with a game-high 26 points. She also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists. The Broncos shot 47.4 percent in the game, including making 10 3-pointers at a 35.7 percent clip behind the arc. Yaiza Rodriguez logged a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, going a perfect 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. Riley Lupfer poured in 11 points.
The Gaels took a five-point, 58-53 lead in the fourth quarter with 7 minutes, 43 seconds, left to play thanks to a 9-0 run that spanned the end of the third and start of the fourth. But Boise State finally found its 3-point shot. The Broncos would make five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, going on a 14-3 run to take a 67-61 lead with under three minutes to play.
Boise State was also clutch from the free-throw line, going 13 for 14 in the final two minutes to keep the Gaels at bay.
Saint Mary’s plays Utah at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Utes were 81-68 winners over Charlotte on Friday. UTAH 81, CHARLOTTE 68
Utah defeated Charlotte 81-68 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Hilton Concord Classic behind Erika Bean’s 12 assists, nine rebounds, seven points, three steals and two blocks. Junior forward Emily Potter had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to control the ball early, but the Utes (4-0, 0-0 Pac-12) were able to recover. Tanaeya Boclair intercepted an inbound play from Charlotte (3-2, 0-0 C-USA), taking the ball to the basket for a layup and a 20-12 lead. Bean's defensive effort gave the Utes the possession with 12 second to play and drew a foul to extend to a 21-14 lead before the end of the first quarter.
