NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — In a high-octane match on a cold, cloudy afternoon, the Saint Mary’s lacrosse team (1-4) fell to Central Connecticut State, 21-12 at Arute Field.

The Gaels accumulated 24 shots, with 23 on target. The Blue Devils totaled 42 shots with 31 on goal. SMC converted 1-of-5 on free position attempts, while CCSU totaled 4-of-5.

First year player Meg Sheehan saw her first action in goal, collecting 10 saves.

Offensively, the Gaels got a pair of hat-tricks from Jocelyn Lubert and Jillian Dunlap. Hanna Dalrymple and Claire Healy each notched a brace on the day. Lauren Neumann and Meagan Bennett each scored a goal each for SMC.

The Gaels will face Manhattan College on Sunday, March 12 in Bronx, New York. SMC will then face off against Wagner College on Monday, March 13 at 12 p.m.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Gaels got on the board at 13 minutes into the game off a goal by Dunlap.

The Blue Devils would then go on a mini 3-0 run to extend the lead, 5-1. Lubert ended the deficit after notching her 14th goal of the season off an assist by senior Megan Zummo. Dunlap would score less than a minute later with her second goal of the match to trim the deficit to 5-3.

Trailing 7-3, the Gaels scored three unanswered. Meagan Bennett collected her sixth goal of the season, while Lubert notched her second score of the game at the 4:43 mark. Dunlap collected her first career hat-trick with 2:51 remaining.

CCSU would finish the final two minutes strong, with two more goals and the 9-6 lead going into halftime.

After the Blue Devils opened the second half with a score, Lubert collected her own hat-trick with a score at the 22:25 mark.

Central Connecticut would extend its lead to 13-7 after three straight goals, but a Claire Healy goal would make the deficit just five with 15:28 to go in the game. CCSU would score another goal to regain the six-goal advantage.

The Gaels would make another push, stringing together three unanswered scores to trail 14-11. Dalrymple would collect two of the three goals while Lauren Neumann converted her sixth goal of the season at the 9:46 mark.

Trailing 17-11 with 6:28 to go, Healy recorded her second score of the game, but the Blue Devils answered right back with back-to-back goals to seal the victory.
