STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In what was a slow start to the match, ended up being a fast-paced finish, as the Saint Mary’s lacrosse team scored 11 second-half goals, but couldn’t complete the come-from-behind win versus Wagner Monday morning, falling 16-13.

The Gaels attack was led with four goals apiece by Jocelyn Lubert and Jillian Dunlap. The duo have come on as of late, as Lubert leads the team with 20 goals while Dunlap is second with 12 scores.

Attacker Emily Mack contributed her first hat-trick of the season on four shots. Claire Healy supported the attack with a game-high three assists.

Meg Sheehan started in goal for the third straight match, and delivered another solid performance with 10 saves.

SMC trailed after the first half, 5-2, in a slow paced opening 30 minutes. The second half quickly picked up, with both teams lighting up the offensive attack.

Trailing 10-3, the Gaels started to make their move after a Lubert score with 19:03 remaining in the match.

Wagner would make another mini run to extend its lead, 14-6. The Gaels kept clawing back with a 5-0 run to pull within three. Dunlap got the run started with a beautiful goal followed by a brace from Mack. Dunlap and Lubert would then score back-to-back with 4:11 remaining.

Despite the run, the comeback came just a little too late, as Wagner score two straight to eventually take the 16-13 victory.

The Gaels will be back home on Sunday, March 19 to host UC Davis at noon.
