EUGENE, Ore. — In the final game of the 2017 season, the Saint Mary’s lacrosse team (1-13, 0-8 MPSF) battled and forced a tight match before falling to the Oregon Ducks (9-7, 5-3 MPSF), 19-11.
The Gaels offense shot 21 times with 15 on target. SMC was also 15-for-27 in clear attempts and caused nine turnovers.
First year player Jillian Dunlap led the attack with four goals, two assists and six draw controls. She finishes the season with a team-high 61 draw controls.
Junior Jocelyn Lubert collected another hat-trick on just three shots to finish the campaign with 31 goals. Claire Healy (2), Meagan Bennett (1) and Megan Zummo (1) scored the remaining goals for the Gaels.
Falling behind 2-0, Healy found Dunlap for the first Gaels score of the game. The Ducks would go on a 5-0 run, but Lubert would end the Ducks streak with her first goal with 13:57 to go in the opening half.
Healy would notch a goal less than two minutes later to cut the deficit to just four. Dunlap, Lubert and Healy would each record another goal for the Gaels to trail at the half, 12-6.
The Ducks would open the second half with a 4-0 run to lead 16-6. Zummo would end the run off a nice feed from Healy. Trailing 17-7, SMC would score back-to-back goals from Dunlap and Lubert. The Gaels would keep it close, scoring five in the second half and slowing down Oregon to just seven scores in the final 30 minutes.
Freshman keeper Meg Sheehan played the entire game in goal for Saint Mary’s, recording four saves.
