MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team will be back on the pitch during the upcoming month for its spring competition which will begin on Saturday, March 25 at 9 a.m. The game will be played on the turf field on campus versus Sonoma State due to expected rain in the forecast.
The youthful Gaels won three West Coast Conference matches during 2016, marking the first time in program history since 2003.
SMC’s Hannah Diaz enters her final year for the Gaels, and continues her run as one of the most dominant strikers in school history. She was recently named to the U-23 U.S. National Team roster. Last season, Diaz was named All-WCC First Team after scoring seven goals and three assists to lead the Gaels attack.
"The returning players have been working very hard with our strength and conditioning coaches so far this spring,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Travis Clarke. “This Spring is important for our development as a team and for the younger players to gain experience and continue to grow and get use to what it takes to compete at this level.”
The Gaels had a total of 11 underclassmen on their roster. Despite the youth, SMC finished the season strong with three wins in the last four games of the season. The Gaels will look to carry over that success and the hard work during the Spring into more success.
“Our Spring schedule mixes home and away games in a way that challenges us as well as giving our team the opportunity to have success and grow,” said Clarke. “The game against Stanford at the end of Spring will be a great experience for our young team. Stanford is one of the top teams in the country and it is important for our team to compete in a game like that to conclude our Spring.”
