MORAGA, Calif. — The beach volleyball season begins to wrap up as Saint Mary’s heads to the USAV Collegiate Challenge in Manhattan Beach on Saturday for some of the final matches before the West Coast Conference Championships.

#17/RV Saint Mary’s (15-4) will begin the day facing off against #14/15 Arizona State (9-11) at 10 a.m. In the second game of the day, the Gaels have a second chance to beat the unbroken in #1/1 Southern California (20-0) at 12:45 p.m. Saint Mary’s will play its final game of the day at 3:30 p.m. against WCC rival Loyola Marymount (8-9).

Saint Mary’s will face a steep test on Saturday against multiple ranked teams. The Gaels are 3-4 against nationally ranked teams and have improved of late. After starting 0-2 against ranked teams, SMC took down Stanford on its home court and has beaten #15/RV California 3-2 twice. Most recently, the Bears travelled to Moraga Commons where the Gaels took the No. 1, 2 and 5 pairs to steal the season series 2-1.

The Sun Devils (9-11) started their season winning five out of their first seven games but have recently lost six out of their eight games. All of their recent losses have come against ranked or receiving votes opponents. Arizona State’s No. 1 pair of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette have gone 15-9 over the season and hold wins against the top pairs of ranked schools such as UCLA and Arizona.

The Trojans (20-0) continue to prove why they are the top team in the nation. Southern California has faced off against and downed 12 ranked opponents including two sweeps of top-10 teams. USC’s No. 1 pair of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes has yet to lose a match and has swept their opponent in all but two matches.

The Lions (8-9) have played well throughout the season, receiving votes on both the DiG Magazine Poll and AVCA Beach Poll during most of the season. LMU has lost to most ranked teams it has played (UCLA, Hawai’i, Pepperdine and USC) but does hold two wins over #13/9 Stetson. Loyola Marymount’s No. 1 tandem of Savannah Slattery and Sarah Sponcil is 10-5 on the season and holds wins over the top pairs of ranked school such as Hawai’i, California and Stetson.

After the USAV Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, the Gaels refrain from action until the WCC Championships on April 21 and 22.
