PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team kicked off the much anticipated 2017 season with a win against West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara and a hard fought loss against #14 California at the Stanford Tournament on Saturday.

During the first game of day one, the Gaels (1-1) beat the Broncos 4-1 (0-2) by clenching the victory before the first and second pair could occupy the court, taking pairs No. 1 and 2-5 but losing pair No. 2. Later in the day, Saint Mary’s lost a close contest to nationally ranked California 3-2. After losing pairs 4 and 5 to the Bears, the Gaels climbed back to take pairs 3 and 1 before losing No. 2.

No. 1 pair and preseason All-WCC team members Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund finished the day undefeated. They started the day sweeping Santa Clara's Hess and Kantor by the largest margin of the day, 21-7, 21-8, and beat California’s No. 1 Bark and Merino in an effort to best the nationally ranked bay area rivals, 21-18, 21-13.

Emily Bible and Sarah Chase, SMC’s No. 3 pair, also won both contests in the first day of the tournament. They began by sweeping Lindberg and Laugero of Santa Clara, 21-12, 21-12, and finished by stealing a close match against California’s No. 3 Gaffney and Setpanof, 21-17, 21-23, 15-8.

Pair No. 4 members Alexis Salmons and Alexsa Parker were able to take Parker’s Saint Mary’s debut against Santa Clara but lost to the Bears in a close match that went to three sets. Mary Hernandez and Lindsey Calvin, Saint Mary’s No. 2 pair, were unable to capitalize on the day and lost both matches.

Saint Mary’s continues the Stanford Tournament in Palo Alto on Sunday against Cal Poly at 9 a.m. and #13 Stanford at noon.
