PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team wraps up their second day of play at the Stanford Tournament on Sunday, splitting matches between two strong California schools as the Gaels' No. 1 pair stays undefeated.

Saint Mary’s (2-2) started the day by beating Cal Poly (2-2) 3-2. The Gaels took pair No. 4 but lost No. 5 and 3 to go down early before pairs 1 and 2 came in clutch to steal the win. In their second game, the Gaels lost to #13 Stanford (3-0) 4-1. The Cardinal took pairs 2-5 giving Emily Bible and Sarah Chase their first loss of the season but were unable to stop Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund who stay unbeaten.

Preseason All-West Coast Conference Team members and No. 1 pair Knudsen and Rund added two more wins to their belt to finish the weekend 4-0. They swept Sonny and Hubbard of Cal Poly, 21-13, 22-20, and held on to win in three sets against the Stanford’s No. 1 pair of Plummer and Gray, 21-23, 21-13, 15-10.

Bible and Chase moved to the No. 2 pair on Sunday but were unable to stay unbeaten. They stole a win against Griesen and Pembroke of Cal Poly after going down early, 13-21, 22-20, 15-10 but lost to Stanford’s Vanjak and Chang in three close sets, 17-21, 21-18, 8-15.

After losing both matches on Saturday, Mary Hernandez and Lindsey Calvin could not gain any traction on Sunday and finished the weekend 0-4. Alexis Salmons and Alexsa Parker were able to finish the weekend 2-2 after splitting both days.

The Gaels were unable to capitalize against ranked opponents thus far, losing to both California and Stanford, but will bounce back to play #13 Stanford in Palo Alto again on March 11 at 11 a.m. They will play Utah later that day at 1 p.m. and will return to Saint Mary’s on March 13 to play Pacific at 3 p.m.
