MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team continued its recent roll Monday, winning its third straight match by a 4-1 score, this time over West Coast Conference rival Pacific in the Gaels’ first home match of the season at Moraga Commons.

Saint Mary’s (5-2) swept through the top two pairs matchups and earned three-set victories at No. 4 and No. 5. Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund stayed undefeated as the Gaels’ top pair, moving to 7-0 on the year with a 21-10, 21-14, win over Pacific’s Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton.

“I am thrilled about the day-to-day improvement this team is showing the coaching staff,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Angela Rock. “Every practice they train hard and listen well during competition, and I know that is a big part of our success. The ability to adapt during a match is critical to winning and the team is excellent at doing this. I am very proud of our success to date and although we have a very tough schedule, my expectations are high and I know we can continue to improve.”

The day started off with excitement for Saint Mary’s, as Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young came all the way back from being down 10-4 in the third and deciding set to win the tiebreaker, 18-16.

“I think the hard work we have put in is really starting to show, said Wilkerson. “We saw that (Saturday) against Stanford and Utah and again today against Pacific. We work each week to take our game up to the next level so that's our next goal.”

The Gaels also got a sweep victory at No. 2 pairs from Emily Bible and Sarah Chase. The duo defeated Pacific’s team of Katrin Gotterba and Maycie LaBass, 21-18, 21-17. Also victorious were Alexsa Parker and Alexis Salmons at No. 4 pairs. They came from behind to win 2-1 over Emily Baptista and Alex Holt, 18-21, 21-12, 15-10.

“Every team battled hard for every point, and I think we all learned new things about our play from today,” said Bible. “We’re excited to put in work at practice this week in preparation for our Monterey tournament this weekend. I can't wait to get back out on the sand and compete against some tough competition.”

Saint Mary’s next travels to Monterey to play No. 3 UCLA and West Coast Conference foe Portland. The Gaels’ next home match is scheduled for March 23 versus Bay Area rival San Francisco.
