INITIAL PHASE OF STUDENT ATHLETE PERFORMANCE COMPLEX APPROVED BY TRUSTEES

Feb. 9, 2018

MORAGA, Calif. – The high performing student-athletes at Saint Mary’s College of California will soon have significantly improved facilities, as will the fans of the Gaels. The Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees recently approved phase one of the redesigned Student Athlete Performance Complex, including a launch date of major renovations beginning in spring 2018.

Phase one of the project includes a number of state-of-the-art enhancements for in-game fan experience and updating life safety upgrades. Construction will begin following the men’s and women’s basketball season and is scheduled to avoid interruption to any Division I athletic programs in the fall of 2018.

“Our commitment to support our student-athletes, coaches, and SMC fans is unwavering. I am confident that the upcoming renovations and improvements to McKeon Pavilion will enhance the competitive advantage we want for all of our student-athletes and I look forward to celebrating these changes with our fans and donors,” President James Donahue said.

The in-game fan experience enhancements include an innovative 48-foot video board, and complete replacement of the audio system. A new lighting system and floor are also included in phase one of the project.

Facility improvements include a new roof and fire and safety upgrades for the 40-year-old pavilion. The new enhancements will ensure a continued safe experience for all student-athletes, coaches, and Saint Mary’s fans.

“We are thankful to our generous donors who have all contributed to this exciting project and we can’t wait to showcase the improvements next season,” Director of Athletics Mike Matoso said. “This project will impact our entire community and will keep us competitive at the highest level.”

Phase two is planned for other new construction in the spring of 2019 and will include additional multimillion dollar upgrades to McKeon Pavilion, and the addition of a new weight and training space at Madigan Gym as part of the overall strategy to create what will now be known as the Student Athlete Performance Complex at Saint Mary’s College.
