Senior Noah McDermott will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Championships West Prelim Meet
Cross Country: Led Gaels as the top runner through the entire season ... Made program history Saturday as the first-ever Saint Mary's cross country runner to compete at the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championship finishing 47th with a 10-kilometer time of 30:31.3 ... Qualified for nationals finishing seventh overall in 29:54.2 at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 11 ... Finished 10th at WCC Championships earning All West Coast Conference First Team ... Had two victories at Speedway Duals on Sep. 15 (22:41) and Bronco Invitational Oct. 15 (23:27.8) ... Set a school and meet record at Bronco Invitational in 23:27.8.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2015-16)
Track: Led Saint Mary's to victory in heat two of the 10,000-meter run finishing in 30 minutes, 17.19 seconds at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Apr. 1 ... Broke Rajpaul Pannu's 10,000-meter record by 12 seconds running 29:33.15 at the Mt. SAC Invitational on Apr. 14 ... Set a personal record and ran a top-three mark in SMC history in the 1,500 with a second place finish in 3:52.87 at the Sacramento State Open on May 7 ... Won the 5,000 meters in a school-record time of 14 minutes, 27.28 seconds at the West Coast Last Chance Meet on May 14 ... Competed in the men's 10,000 meters, finishing 28th in 30 minutes, 32.42 seconds, only 30 seconds away from the final NCAA Championships qualifying spot.
Cross Country: In his first race of the season, grabbed an 11th place finished at the 8-kilometer Capital Cross Challenge in 25:11.6 for the fourth fastest Gael time ... Finished the 8-kilometer Bronco Invitational in 11th place in 24:15.2 for the fastest Gael finish and his season record for this distance ... Finished the 8 km West Coast Conference Championships in 20th place in 25:46.9 for the fastest Gael time ... Finished 101st at the 10 km NCAA West Regionals in 33:07.7 for a season record for this distance.
AS A FRESHMAN (2014-15)
Track: Battled minor injuries throughout track ... Saw best performance at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival 5000m with a time of 15:19 ... Ran one 1500m race (4:14.50) at the West Coast Last Chance Meet on May 9.
Cross Country: Put on solid debut season ... Finished second in 25:10 at the Stanford Invitational on Sep. 27 ... Led the Gaels with victory in 24:14 at Bronco Invitational on Oct. 18 ... Competed in the West Coast Conference Championships on Nov. 1 finishing in 20th in 24:04 ... Finished his first season as a Gael placing 48th overall in the second best time in program history at the NCAA West Regional Meet on Nov. 14.
PRIOR TO SAINT MARY'S: Arias joins the Gaels from a local powerhouse St. Joseph Notre Dame, coached by Tony Fong ... Gabe had success at the highest level of competition and continued to improve each year throughout high school ... Arias boasts respectable PR's in track with times of 4:24.57 (1600m), 8:53.6 (3000m) and 9:22.77 (3200m) ... Led the Pilots to two Division 5 CIF State championships (2012-2013) and 3 NCS Championships (2010-2013).
PERSONAL: Arias chose Saint Mary's because of the amazing academic programs offered and the growing competitive culture on the cross country and track team ... He loves the wildlife around campus ... He wants to find a career the can impact the community ... He loves going on walks on the beach.
