Harlan Lopez Brings Forth Experience And Success To The Saint Mary's Cross Country and Track and Field Program.
The senior set a near program record for the 3,000 meter race in this past weekend's spring opener.
The Saint Mary's men's and women's track teams opened their 2018 seasons at the UW Indoor Open in Seattle
In the 2013-2014 season were highlighted by national recognition performances by both the men and women team leaders. In Cross Country Kinsey would oversee yet another WCC- All Conference performance by senior Rajpaul Pannu. During the season, Pannu would also win the Inter-Region Jamboree meet held by Sacramento state which would earn him National Athlete of the Week honorable mention honors. Pannu would finish the season as a second time NCAA All-West region runner for the Gaels. Pannu would set the 8k school record in 23:28. In just the third season of Track for the Gaels, Kinsey would oversee a Men's team that had six men break 4 minutes in the 1500 including sophomore Zach Hansen and junior Cormac MCullauh who would run 3:49 apiece. In the 3k Steeple senior Trevor Araujo would break his school record to improve to 9:25. In the 5k Pannu would lower his school record to 14:28 and the 10,000 school record to 29:45. The Cross Country women would see true freshman Ali Teliha enter the top 5 all-time 6k for the Gaels at the WCC preview-meet held in Malibu. For Track senior Alicia Doohan would set a school record in the 800 in 2:16 in her sole attempt at the race. Both Doohan and Teliha would dip into the 4:30's in the 1500 with Teliha running 4:34.81 which would qualify her as the first ever Gael to race at the USA Track and Field Junior National championships.She placed second in her qualifying heat just behind national sensation Alexa Efraimson.
On the men's side,the 2012 cross country team, again, rewrote the record book with major contributions from young athletes and seasoned veterans alike. New school records were set in the both the 8K (23:53) and 10K (30:10) distances by junior Rajpaul Pannu. Pannu received All-WCC First Team honors after placing 8th in the WCC Championships, a first for Saint Mary's since 2008, and USTFCCCA All-West Region after place 19th at the NCAA West Regional, also a first in Saint Mary's cross country history. Nick Ellingson broke both sophomore class records for 8K (24:48) and 10K (31:04) while Zach Hansen broke both of Ellingson's freshman class records (25:21/32:00). The team had record places at major invitationals, including 12th at the Stanford Invitational, 20th at the NCAA West Regional, and sixth at the WCC Championships. The sixth place finish at the WCC Championships was Saint Mary's best since 2000.
The 2011 men's cross country season saw huge gains from a large freshman class and steady improvement from upperclassmen. Sophomore Rajpaul Pannu reset the school 10K record (31:12) at the NCAA West Regional meet, placing 89th overall. The team placed seventh out of nine teams at the WCC Championships, marking the best team finish in nearly a decade. Nick Ellingson set a freshman school record for 10K at 32:52. On the track, the men set new school records in the 800m, 3K steeplechase, and 5K.
The 2010 men's cross country season featured a new 10K school record (31:54) as well as a seventh place finish in the WCC and 25th place at the NCAA West Region.
On the women's side, the 2012 cross country season was highlighted by the addition of multiple impact freshman and the steady improvement of upperclassmen. Sophomore Cristina Garcia made drastic improvements en route to two school records in the 5K (17:38) and 6K (21:36). Garcia's record performance was also the fastest time in Saint Mary's history at the NCAA West Regional meet. Freshmen Carina Novell and Katie Alioto burst onto the scene to take down Garcia's freshmen records. Kinsey helped lead Novell to an 18:08 5K and Alioto to a 22:09 6K performance. The women placed eighth at the WCC Championships, the program's best finish since 2006, and 27th at the NCAA West Regional, shattering the previous team time school record (22:29).
The 2011 cross country season saw a mix of experienced athletes excelling and young athletes growing. Freshman Cristina Garcia set new freshman class records for 5K (18:35) and 6K (22:34) while the team narrowly missed its previous school record for team time at the WCC Championships (23:29). On the track, Kinsey led the women's team to another school record in the 3K steeplechase and saw nine of his 10 student-athletes set new personal bests
The 2010 cross country season saw Saint Mary's reach new heights under Kinsey's tutelage. On the women's side, Kinsey led the Gaels to four school records including the 5K (17:42), 6K (21:40), team time at the WCC Championships (23:19), and individual 6K at the WCC Championships (22:34). A young Gaels squad finished eighth in the WCC and 29th in the NCAA West Regional. On the track, the Gaels added four more women's school records in the 5K, 3K steeplechase, 1500m, and 4x400m relay.
Kinsey's student-athletes have produced the first NCAA All-Academic squads in ten years at Saint Mary's when both the women's cross country and track & field teams did so in 2011 and 2012, respectively. In 2013 and 2014 both teams would earn the honor for track & field. His teams would also win highest team GPA in 2011 and 2012 among every other division one program at Saint Mary's.
His efforts have resulted in an increased recruiting base and a higher exposure across the Bay Area and beyond. He became the first full-time head coach in the program's history in 2010 after spending a year as the top assistant coach at Creighton University.
Kinsey graduated from Saint Mary's in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in History and was a three-time captain for the cross country program. He helped lead the Gaels to a second place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships as a junior in 1999, the school's best finish at the conference meet. He was also a member of the NCAA Student Athletic Advisory Committee on campus from 1999-2001.
Prior to working at Creighton, he served as an assistant track & field coach at his former school, Granada High School in Livermore, CA, where several of his runners went on to run at the collegiate level.
Kinsey is married to his wife Genevieve ('05), also a Saint Mary's alum, and together they have two daughters, Kaitlyn and Jacquelyn.
