USTFCCCA Release

NEW ORLEANS - The Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country teams were both named All-Academic teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the second straight year Friday.

The Gaels women's team turned in a Grade Point Average of 3.40, while the men posted a 3.23. The national academic accolades follow a fall in which the Gaels also collected seven West Coast Conference All-Academic honors. The men's team had five WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention awards last fall, while the women had two.

Alex Riggsby's 3.94 GPA in his first semester of college led the men's team. The Gaels men carried 12 student-athletes with GPAs over 3.0, and seven of those had GPAs above 3.5. The women's team saw two freshmen post perfect 4.0 GPAs in their first semester, Abigayle Mitchell and Emma McCarthy. Abby Bolt's 3.81 GPA in biology is the highest among the women's returners. Nine Gaels women had GPAs of 3.25 or better, and six of those were at 3.63 or above.

Overall, there were 423 teams that brought home All-Academic honors. Of those 423 teams, 228 of them were women's programs and 195 of them men's. That included WCC men's runner-up Portland being named the USTFCCCA Scholar Team of the Year.

The Saint Mary's cross country teams now shift into outdoor track season this spring, with their first outdoor meet on March 4 at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif.
