SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s men’s and women’s cross country teams were both well represented Wednesday on the 2017 West Coast Conference All-Academic teams, as they combined for seven total Honorable Mention accolades.

The men led the way with five student-athletes receiving WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention. Josh Spooner’s 3.92 Grade Point Average in environmental science led the way. Spooner was a top-50 finisher at the WCC Championship in October. Noah McDermott, one of the Gaels’ top-two runners all season long, made the list with a 3.79 GPA in kinesiology. Mason Labadie, one of four Gaels in the top-10 for a team win at the season-opening Nevada Twilight Classic, earned honorable mention accolades with a 3.75 GPA in business administration.

Raymond Boffman, who won the Gaels’ dual meet at Santa Clara on Sept. 22 and finished fourth at the Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame, landed on the list with a 3.20 GPA in environmental studies. And Samir Habash was named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention after competing in all of the Gaels’s races during the year with a 3.42 GPA in economics.

Abby Bolt earned her second straight honorable mention accolade with her 3.88 GPA in biology. She has been the Gaels’ top runner all season long, including a victory in SMC’s dual meet versus Santa Clara. Katie Watson also made the list in her first year of eligibility, posting a 3.71 GPA in economics after running in all of the Gaels’ races and collecting two top-10 finishes.

In all 57 WCC male and female student-athletes earned GPAs of at least 3.50 and 40 had GPAs of at least 3.75. At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.
