Matt Fonteno will return for his fifth season as an assistant coach and will also serve as recruiting coordinator for the 2018 season.

Fonteno came to Moraga for the 2013-14 season after one year as an assistant coach at Nevada. While with the Wolfpack, he served as first base coach for longtime head coach Gary Powers.

Prior to joining the Nevada staff, Fonteno spent four seasons as an assistant at Chico State, where he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. The Petaluma, Calif. native was part of the 2012 Wildcats squad that won the NCAA Division II West Region and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series. That team won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title and went 40-19 overall. Classes that Fonteno recruited to Chico State yielded 17 all-conference selections, one conference Freshman of the Year, eight All-West region selections, one All-American and two Major League Baseball draftees.

Before moving to Chico, Fonteno served three seasons as an assistant coach at UNLV. While with the Rebels, he coached first base and worked with the outfielders, hitters and base runners. In his three seasons in Las Vegas, seven players were drafted by Major League Baseball teams.

Fonteno has also served as an assistant coach at California Lutheran University, and coached summer ball with the Battle Creek Bombers (Mich.), Petersburg Generals (Va.) and Highland Park Blue Sox (Texas).

A graduate of York College in Nebraska, Fonteno was the Panthers' starting center fielder for his final two collegiate seasons. As a senior, he was an all-conference selection and helped York to its first national ranking. He began his collegiate career at College of Marin in Kentfield, Calif. as both a first baseman and center fielder.
