Baseball Falls in Season Opener
Cal Poly Spoils Gaels' Opener With a 10-3 Victory

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team opened the 2004 season with a 10-3 loss to Cal Poly on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. The Mustangs managed 13 hits to the Gaels nine, in Saint Mary's first home opener since the 1992 season. With the loss the Gaels drop to 0-1 on the season and Cal Poly improved to 2-2.
The Gaels started junior college transfer Jordan Simo, who picked up the loss. Simo started the game giving up two runs in the first inning, but settled down to pitch five innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Saint Mary's senior Dane Dobrinich came in relief for Simo, pitching four innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
Cal Poly then jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Gaels answered with two runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. Sam Carter led off the inning with a triple to left field, followed by a Bryan Byrne sacrifice fly to score Carter. Delaney Gallagher added a single, stole second and then scored on an Adam Callan RBI single.
In the game, Carter went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Callan went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gil went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, January 31 when they host Cal Poly in the second game of a three-game series at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
