Bowden tossed a complete game to earn his first victory of the season, and improves to 1-2 on the season. Sacramento State scored all four runs in the top of the fifth inning, which included four of the Hornets' seven hits. Bowden recorded six strikeouts and allowed no walks.

Byrne supplied the offense for the Gaels as he finished the day 2-for-3 with two homeruns and three RBI. The two dingers by the freshman are the first of his career. Mike Sansoe was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a double and Gilbert Gil was 2-for-4 from his leadoff spot.

After three scoreless innings, Saint Mary's scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After James Gaulke singled to open the inning, third baseman Bryan Burne stroked a one-out, two-run homerun to right field off Hornet losing pitcher Chris Kinsey, for a 2-0 Gael lead.

Sacramento State answered with a four-run fifth inning. The first two runs of the inning came off RBI singles from Brian Blauser and Tim Reimer. With Reimer standing on first, Cliff Hinkle hit an opposite field homerun to give Sacramento State a 4-2 lead. The Gaels answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning when Adam Bellows singled home Mike Harris, who drew a walk to lead off the inning for SMC.

Saint Mary's evened the score at 4-4 when Byrne tagged an opposite field homerun, his second homer of the game, to lead off the sixth inning. SMC regained its lead at 5-4 following an Adam Bellows sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning that plated Sansoe from third base. The sac fly by Bellows would stand as the game-winning run for the Gaels.

Kinsey would see his record fall to 1-2 on the season following the loss. Kinsey pitched seven innings, gave up five earned runs, allowed eight hits and struck out two batters.
