Baseball Wins Third Straight Game Against UW Milwaukee
Jensen Stays Hot Going 3-5 With Two Homeruns
Feb. 29, 2008
Moraga CA - Sophomore left fielder Kyle Jensen might not want February to end, Jensen went 3-for-5 today with a pair of homeruns, as Saint Mary's (4-1) defeated UW Milwaukee (1-3) 9-4. Jensen, who came into the game with five doubles already this season, hit his first homerun in the bottom of the third. It didn't take long for him to hit his second long ball of the season as he went to the opposite field in the bottom of the sixth in what ended up being a big inning for the Gaels.
Sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Berl (2-0) struggled a little with his command today, walking one, and hitting three Panther batters. Overall however, he still pitched well enough for the win, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up four earned runs, four hits, and striking out seven.
The Panthers took the lead in the top of the third after rallying for three runs, two of them coming off a single from senior shortstop Jesse Hart. The Panthers added a their third run when junior first baseman Shawn Wozniak hit into a fielders choice scoring freshman Cole Kraft.
The Gaels saw another strong performance from their bullpen as freshman pitcher Alex Schmarzo made his second appearance of the season, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up no hits and no walks, retiring all five batters he faced. Freshman Dorsey Ek made his Saint Mary's debut pitching a scoreless ninth inning to end the game. It was not a save opportunity but Ek showed good command of his fastball retiring all three of the batters he faced.
The Panthers bullpen on the other hand was not able to slow down the SMC bats, when starter Tim Hoy (0-2) left the game after 5.1 innings pitched. Senior Adam Ferrell came in and finished out the bottom of the sixth but not after giving up a double to senior right fielder Kenny Fuglerud which brought in two runs. As well as giving up the long homerun to Jensen.
The series continues Saturday March 1st at 11:00 AM as part of a double header at Louis Guisto Field. Brian Justice looks to continue the strong start by SMC starting pitchers, in all 5 games the starter has gone at least six innings. Justice will face junior RHP Craig Meier, who is 1-0 this year, with a 3.68 era.
