Baseball Moves Unbeaten Streak To 10 With Two Wins
Gaels Earn Doubleheader Sweep Over The Lions
March 4, 2007
Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team improved its unbeaten streak to 10 with two more victories. The Gaels swept the Columbia Lions in a Sunday doubleheader with 12-7 and 3-0 victories. After the day, the Gaels move to 12-8-1 on the season while the Lions fall to 0-3-1.
Just like yesterday the Gaels exploded for 12 runs this time on 13 hits. Saint Mary's got things going quickly, plating eight runs in the first three frames. The Gaels tacked on one in the sixth and three more in the seven to earn the victory. The Lions did most of their damage in the seventh and ninth where they combined for all seven runs.
Scott Schneider was impressive in the start, allowing just one hit in four innings. Matt McCormick earned the win with two innings of one-hit relief. Andrew Walther was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
The 12 runs mark the sixth time this season the Gaels have plated a dozen or more. SMC was led by junior Gilbert Urbina and Kyle Jensen. Urbina batted 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Jensen recorded three RBI with a hit.
Andrew Ward did most of the damage for the Lions. Ward drove in three with a 1-for-4 effort. Mike Malfettone scored twice and tallied a hit for Columbia.
Saint Mary's senior Eric Cattoni had a huge day on the base paths. The leadoff man swiped four bags in four attempts, including two in the first inning after getting hit by a Walther pitch. Cattoni also scored three runs and added a RBI.
The front end of the doubleheader proved to be won with the bats but game two was won behind the arm of newcomer Anthony Aliotti. The freshman stymied the Lions in a complete game five-hit shutout. Aliotti fanned 12 with no walks in the seven inning game.
The Gaels once again jumped out to an early lead, plating all three runs in the first two innings. That is all Aliotti would need as he put together his finest pitching performance of his young career.
Cattoni once again set the table when he began the game with a single through the right side. Joel Staples then got to second and advanced Cattoni to third on an error by the third baseman. Michael Nieto and Aliotti both drove in runs on groundballs.
Freshman Ryan Mulligan smacked a double to begin the second and then was brought in after J.P. Musgrove moved him to third on groundout and Gilbert Urbina drove him in on a single through the right side.
Mulligan led all SMC hitters with two hits. Urbina batted 1-for-3 with a RBI while Cattoni, Staples and Musgrove added hits for the Gaels.
Ron Williams paced the Lions with a 2-for-3 effort. Craig Rodwogin, Spencer Silverstein and Jake Summerhays tallied the three other hits for Columbia.
Henry Perkins (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings.
Saint Mary's will take a well deserved week off and put its 10-game unbeaten streak on the line when it hosts Southern Utah. First pitch of the four-game set is scheduled for Friday, March 16 at 2 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
