March 10, 2006

Box Score

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team needed only four innings to put 10 runs on the board to run away from the Northern Illinois Huskies 10-2 Friday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. Senior Joel Fountain earned his third consecutive victory while the Gaels improve to 10-7 on the year.

The wet and near freezing temperatures didn't slow down the Saint Mary's bats as the Gaels banged out 15 hits and scored 10 runs.

SMC began its scoring barrage with a four-run first. Junior Eric Cattoni set the pace with a double to center field. Senior Sam Carter then singled in the hole on the left side to bring in Cattoni. After senior Preston Young reached on an error, Delaney Gallagher smashed a double down the left field line that brought in Carter.

Freshman Joel Staples then drove in Young on a groundout to the second baseman. Senior Mike Harris rounded out the inning with a RBI single to center field.

NIU answered back in the second with two. Jeff Thomas led off the top half with a double down the right field line. Tim Ryan brought in Jesse Seykora on a groundout to short. Seykora led off the inning with a walk. Matt Behren then doubled to right-center to bring in Thomas.

The Gaels then added three more in the bottom half, giving Fountain all the room he would need. Cattoni again began the rally with his second double in as many at-bats. Senior Orben Frederick then followed suit with a double of his own to bring in Cattoni. Carter then brought in Frederick on an RBI single to right. Gallagher capped off the inning with an RBI groundout to second.

In the fourth, SMC would tack on three more. Frederick and Carter each started the inning with singles. Young then belted his fourth home run on the year clearing the bases on the three-run shot over the right-center field wall.

Carter (3-for-4) and Gallagher (3-for-5) each led the Gaels with three hits. Carter drove in two and scored three runs while Gallagher also drove in two and scored once. Young led all SMC hitters with three RBIs while Cattoni (2-for-5), Frederick (2-for-4) and Harris (2-for-4) each tallied multi-hit games for the Gaels.

Fountain piggy-backed his complete game one-hitter with a two-run, six strikeout performance in seven innings. The senior scattered seven hits and walked one.

Saint Mary's has now won four straight games and five straight at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels now boast a 9-2 mark at home. SMC will return to the field tomorrow for game two of the three game series against NIU. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
