Los Angeles, CA - Loyola Marymount posted a four-run seventh inning to down Saint Mary's 7-3, Friday afternoon at Page Stadium. LMU, which won its third straight game, moved to 19-12 overall, 6-4 in the West Coast Conference, while the Gaels fell to 13-17, 4-6 in conference.
LMU's Chris Pettit had three hits and two RBI, while Lion designated hitter Joshua Whitesell hit his eighth home run and his team leading 13th double of the season. Whitesell also drove in four RBI, while Jonathan Oller hit a pair of doubles and scored two runs.
Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, Pettit hit a double with one out. After a single by Joe Frazee and a RBI single by Billy Lockin, Whitesell hit his smash to deep right-centerfield to put the Lions up 6-3.
The Lions scored an insurance run in the eighth inning as LMU's Vincent Cordova earned the victory, moving to 4-2 on the season. Cordova allowed just one earned run on 11 hits, while striking out five and walking two in seven innings of work. Lion freshman Stephen Kahn picked up his fifth save of the season, throwing two hitless innings. Kahn had five strikeouts, while striking out the side in the ninth inning.
After the Gaels scored three runs, including two unearned, in the top of the fifth inning, the Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. With one out, freshman James Cooper provided a RBI single to plate Oller, bringing the Lions to within 3-1.
The Lions narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the sixth. LMU catcher Jonathan Higashi led off the inning with a single and scored as Whitesell drove him home. Gael starting pitcher Eric Bowden retired the next three Lions to escape any further damage.
Bowden dropped to 4-4, lasting 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits. Gilbert Gil, Delaney Gallagher and Mike Harris all had two hits for Saint Mary's, while Gil hit his sixth double of the season.
SMC will continue its series with the Lions tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The two teams will conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. Sunday contest.
