Bryan Byrne Goes 4-for-6 at the plate
April 19, 2003
San Diego, CA- A wild affair at USD's Cunningham Stadium resulted in an 18-11 victory for San Diego in game one of a double header with visiting Saint Mary's. The top four batters in the Torero line-up (Tony Perez, Joey Prast, Freddy Sandoval and Josh Hansen) combined to go 15-for-18, helping the Toreros register a season-high 22 hits.
San Diego raced out to 10-3 lead Saturday morning before the Gaels came storming back with eight fifth inning runs to take a one run advantage. During the rally, Saint Mary's brought 14 batters to the plate and not only chased Torero starter Aaron Wilson and two San Diego relievers- USD Head Coach Rich Hill and assistant Sean Kenny were ejected by Saturday's umpiring crew.
The Toreros had too much offense in game one, answering the Saint Mary's comeback by batting around in the sixth and pushing across six runs. With a game still to be played, USD escaped with the seven-run victory and sophomore reliever Sean Warlop (4-3) was credited with the win.
A day removed from homering, doubling and knocking in three runs, San Diego left fielder Josh Hansen was 5-for-6 with three doubles in game one on Saturday. Right fielder Joey Prast singled three times and tied a USD single season school record with his 21st double to enjoy a 4-for-5 outing at the plate for the Toreros.
Around the bases Prast stole four bags in game one to bring his season total to 15, a USD team-high. Sophomore third baseman Freddy Sandoval was a perfect 2- for-2 on the day, walking twice and bringing in two on a pair of sacrifice flies. Senior center fielder Tony Perez scored four times in game one, doubled and hit three singles to go 4-for-5.
Saint Mary's used four different pitchers during game one, with junior Jeremy Gonzales (1-2) taking the loss. Gael starter Matt Yorkin lasted just two innings and was tagged with six runs - four earned- and allowed seven hits. Relievers David Fox, Gonzalez and Dane Dobrinich faired no better comibining to yeild 12 runs on 15 hits over the final six frames for Saint Mary's.
