Four-Run Seventh Lifts Baseball To Series Victory
Gaels Down Rival Broncos 5-4

Moraga, CA- For the second consecutive game the Saint Mary's baseball team used late-inning heroics to down the rival Santa Clara Broncos. The Gaels exploded for four runs in the seventh to down the Broncos 5-4 Sunday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. The win marks the first conference series victory for SMC as they improve to 21-26-1 overall and 3-15 in West Coast Conference play.
Down 4-1 in the seventh frame the Gaels bats awoke to pound out five hits en route to four runs. Sophomore Ryan Young and Eric Cattoni led off the frame with a single and double, respectively. With the two in scoring position freshman Michael Cipolla came through once again.
The newcomer drilled a single through the right side to plate both runs and move the score to 4-3. Freshman Randy Wells then drilled a double to put Cipolla on third. Fellow freshman Anthony Aliotti then connected for a two-run single through the right side to give the Gaels the lead.
Saint Mary's freshman closer Taylor Stanton made sure it was a lead that would not be relinquished as he struck out two in two innings to earn his fifth save on the season. Freshman hurler Brandon Berl improved to 4-5 after allowing eight hits and four runs with three strikeouts.
Steve Kalush (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits. SCU starter Donald Brandt allowed six hits and a run with four Ks in six innings.
Cattoni got the Gaels on the board when he was brought home on a Wells single through the left side. Cattoni led off the inning with a double - his first of two in the game.
The Broncos got their big hit off the bat of Jon Karcich. The shortstop hit a three-run home run in the fourth to give SCU a 4-1 lead.
Cipolla batted a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with two RBI and a run scored. Cattoni batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Wells tallied two more hits with a RBI and run scored. The two runs scored by Cattoni move him into a tie for third in the single season annals with 52.
David Hoffmire was the only SCU batter to tally a multi-hit game. Karcich and Carl Bacon drove in the runs for the Broncos.
Saint Mary's will head over the bridge and face Bay Area rival San Francisco in the final conference series of the season. First pitch is slated for Friday, May 11 at 3 p.m. from Bendetti Diamond.
