MORAGA, Calif. - The sun broke through just in time on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field, as the Saint Mary's baseball team hosted its first full team practice in preparation for the 2018 season.

It was a full first full day of practice for the Gaels, including warm-up drills for all players and breakout groups for both pitchers and field players. Pitchers ran through an array of arm-strengthening and warm-up practices while also honing their defensive skills coming off the mound. Saint Mary's position players participated in multiple drills on the first day, ranging from base running to throwing to defense and hitting.

The Gaels return eight of nine starters from 2017's lineup and 21 letterwinners overall. Saint Mary's lost its weekend starting rotation to graduation and the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, but it returns seven arms that appeared in multiple games last year, including three pitchers that made multiple starts. Saint Mary's also welcomes 16 newcomers - eight pitchers and eight position players - with 14 freshmen and two junior college transfers.

The 2018 First Pitch Dinner will be held on Feb. 9 at the Blackhawk Country Club in Danville. Click here to RSVP. The Gaels will host their annual Alumni Game at Louis Guisto Field at 1 p.m. on Feb. 10, the day after the First Pitch Dinner. Contact SMC Volunteer Assistant Ross Gusky at to participate. The 2018 season begins on Feb. 16, at Big West Conference champion Long Beach State. The Gaels' 2018 home opener will be on March 2, versus 2018 NCAA Regional participant Xavier.
