MORAGA, Calif. — It’s another series on the road for the Saint Mary’s baseball team this week as it travels to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Pac-12 Conference member Arizona State for a three-game series starting Friday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Gaels came back from being down on Sunday 1-0 to beat Long Beach State and clinched the three-game series, 2-1, to open up the season. The Gaels continued its road trip Monday at CSU Bakersfield but couldn’t hold on to its lead after the Roadrunners came from behind to edge the Gaels, 3-2. Saint Mary’s had nine hits against Bakersfield as Joe Vranesh and Jackson Thoreson led the team with two hits apiece. The duo hit their first home runs of the season as Vranesh opened the season with one against the Dirtbags and Thoreson towered a shot against the Roadrunners.

The Gaels (2-2) earned a 2-1 series victory at Long Beach State to open the season, but couldn’t pull off the win Monday at CSU Bakersfield, losing 3-2 to start the year 2-2. Saint Mary’s took a 6-4 victory over Arizona State in the teams’ last meet in 2001.

Saint Mary’s is 42nd in the country and leads the West Coast Conference with 1.15 WHIP. The Gaels’ pitching crew has 19 strikeouts while only allowing eight walks in the last four matchups. Nick Frank leads the Gaels with four strikeouts as Ken Waldichuck and Carlos Lomeli have three each. SMC hasn’t allowed its opponents to score often with a 2.12 ERA. The Gaels hold their opponents to a .252 batting average. Kevin Milam leads the team with five hits to go with one RBI. Austin Chauvin, Edward Haus, and Vranesh have four hits each. Thoreson leads the team with four runs, three hits, one home run and two RBIs.

The Sun Devils (2-2) began the season splitting their series, 2-2, against Miami University in its home-opener over the weekend. Arizona State played two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday as the team went 1-1 on both days.

Gage Canning leads the team with nine hits and four RBIs. Spencer Torkelson has seven hits, four runs, five RBIs and leads the Sun Devils with three home runs. Lyle Lin gave ASU a total of seven hits and five runs over the weekend. The Sun Devils are hitting .321 while holding its opponents to a .264 average. ASU carries a 3.97 ERA while walking 20 hitters with 27 strikeouts. Eli Lingos is a starting pitcher for the Sun Devils and leads the team with six strikeout and Boyd Vander Kooi is second on the team with five.

Saint Mary’s will return to Louis Guisto Field for its 2018 home opener on March 2, kicking off a three-game series versus Xavier.
