WICHITA, Kan. - Saint Mary's baseball senior catcher Jackson Thoreson was named Tuesday to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com Watch List, an award given each season to the country's best NCAA Division I catcher by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

Thoreson is already off to a hot start in 2018. He currently sports an eight-game hitting streak, during which he's hitting .323 with two multi-hit games, a home run and three doubles. He has reached base safely in all of the Gaels' 10 games this season. He has been SMC's starting backstop in nine of the 10 games, and he is a stalwart for SMC both behind the plate and in the middle of the lineup.

Thoreson is one of 97 catchers nominated for the award. He is one of just 13 catchers on the West Coast to appear on the watch list, and just one of three West Coast Conference backstops, joining Gonzaga's Austin Pinorini and San Francisco's Riley Helland.

The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 16. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 21st Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2018.

Thoreson and Saint Mary's begin a four-game series at Pac-12 Conference member Washington State on Thursday. Fans can find live coverage links for all games at SMCGaels.com.
