Saint Mary's swept a three-game series from two-time defending Big East Tournament champion Xavier in its 2018 home-opening series, taking both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday and finishing off the sweep with a 9-1 win on Monday. The Gaels dominated the Musketeers on both sides, hitting .315 and scoring 17 runs in the series while the pitching staff held Xavier to a .204 batting average while posting a 1.33 ERA with 38 strikeouts in three games.

The Gaels (7-3) have won three straight and five of their last six, the lone loss coming by just one run at Arizona State on Feb. 25. SMC won its only other series versus a Pac-12 school this season, taking two of three from the Sun Devils on Feb. 23-25. The Gaels are 4-3 on the road this season after going 14-11 away from home last year.

Kevin Milam (.344) and Austin Chauvin (.333) carry the Gaels' top batting averages through 10 games. Jackson Thoreson is the team's leaing slugger with a .457 slugging percentage and four extra-base hits (three doubles, one home run). Thoreson is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, while Chauvin is right behind him with hits in five straight contests.

The Saint Mary's pitching staff carries a 2.07 ERA - ninth best in the country. And the staff's strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 4.89 is tops in the NCAA. Gaels arms are also No. 2 in the nation with 1.86 walks allowed per nine innings. That number is buoyed by a starting staff who's only allowed 1.58 walks per nine innings and carries a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 6.09. Nick Frank, Kevin Milam and Ken Waldichuk have each already recorded 20 or more strikeouts in three starts each this season, and each of them have not walked more than four batters.

The Cougars (2-6) were swept in a three-game series at Alabama two weekends ago. They haven't played since after a series versus Sacramento State was cancelled last weekend due to weather. WSU earned two wins in Arizona over UC Riverside and Grand Canyon on Feb. 18 and 20, respectively.

Washington State has three starters hitting .320 or better, led by Wyatt Segle's .391 average. His .462 on-base percentage also leads the team. Andres Alvarez, second on the team with a .355 average, is the team's top power threat with a starting lineup-best .419 slugging percentage. No WSU starting pitcher has earned a win yet. Ryan Walker has been the Cougars' most effective reliever with a 1-0 record, 1.42 ERA and nine strikeouts to just one walk in 6 1/3 innings.

Saint Mary's has made effective use of the sacrifice fly early this season. The Gaels lead the West Coast Conference and are 20th in the NCAA with eight sacrifice flies through their first 10 games. Edward Haus and Austin Chauvin have two each to lead the team. Chauvin hit both of his on Monday in the series finale versus Xavier.

Saint Mary's returns home on March 14 for a single midweek home game versus Fresno State. The Gaels then begin WCC play back in the Pacific Northwest with a three-game series at Portland.
