2018 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Region Teams announced

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Saint Mary’s baseball’s Ken Waldichuk added another accolade to his already-decorated 2018 sophomore campaign Wednesday, being named to the All-West Region Second Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.

Waldichuk finished his first year in the Gaels’ starting rotation winning this season’s West Coast Conference pitching Triple Crown, leading the conference in ERA (2.05) and strikeouts (118), and tying for the conference lead in wins with eight. He posted seven double-figure strikeout games, including three in conference play. He mowed down a career-high 14 versus San Francisco on April 8 and had two other games with 12 strikeouts. Twice he held opponents to just two hits in his starts while beginning the year 6-1 with a miniscule 1.15 ERA in his first nine appearances.

Waldichuk was named first team all-WCC and a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in May. His ERA (third) and strikeouts (fourth) both rank among the top-five all-time for single-season performances at Saint Mary’s. At the conclusion of the NCAA’s regular season, Waldichuk ranked 16th in the country with his 118 strikeouts, 25th with a 0.96 WHIP, and 27th with his 2.05 ERA.

Only two other WCC players made the ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region teams. WCC Pitcher of the Year Jonathan Pendergast from regular season champion Pepperdine was named to the First Team, and WCC Player of the Year Jordan Qsar – also from the Waves – was named to the Second Team with Waldichuk.
