BSB | Two Gaels Drafted In Top-Five Rounds Of MLB Draft

NEW YORK — Two Saint Mary's baseball players were selected Tuesday in the top-five rounds of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, with right-handed pitcher Drew Strotman going in the fourth round to the Tampa Bay Rays and infielder Zach Kirtley going in the fifth round to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Strotman was picked by the Rays with the 109th overall pick, the fourth pick in the fourth round. Kirtley represented the 154th overall pick, the 19th pick by the Cardinals in the fifth round.

Strotman and Kirtley's selections give Saint Mary's five total picks in the top-10 rounds over the last two years. Strotman is the Gaels' highest-drafted player since 2012 at 109th overall. It is the second straight year SMC has had a pitcher taken in the fourth round after All-American Corbin Burnes was chosen by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round of the 2016 Draft.

Strotman finished 2017 with a 6-1 record and team-high 75 strikeouts. He made 18 appearances with seven starts and also logged a save. He was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team and also All-WCC Honorable Mention. He was named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2016.

Kirtley tied the single-season Saint Mary's modern-day record for walks in a season with 48 in 2017. He batted .292, slugged .439 and led SMC with an on-base percentage of .433. He hit five home runs, 16 doubles and had 42 RBIs while scoring 40 runs and stealing three bases. Kirtley was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2015 and was named to the WCC All-Freshmen Team. In 2016, he was a First Team All-WCC honoree and earned the WCC Tournament MVP nod.

The 2017 MLB Draft continues at 9 a.m. PDT Wednesday with the final 30 rounds, No. 11-40. Live coverage of every round and every pick is available on
