Baseball Inks Three Players For 2009 Campaign
Head Coach Jedd Soto Announces Fourth Recruiting Class at SMC
Nov. 27, 2007
Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head baseball coach Jedd Soto announced Friday that three players have signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period to attend SMC and play baseball. The recruiting efforts were headed by Gabe Zappin, associate head coach and former recruiting coordinator. The fourth class under Soto and his coaching staff include two right-handed pitchers in Kyle Barraclaugh and Nathan Gonzalez and an outfielder Donald Collins.
"After signing two large classes in 2007 and 2008, this year's club is young and talented. We identified a few key positions to fill with only a handful of graduating seniors departing this season. This group of players will represent Saint Mary's College with excellence on and off the field - they will make an immediate impact at SMC. Coach Zappin has done another outstanding job of putting together this class," said Soto.
Kyle Barraclough (Santa Clara, CA) was a first team all-league selection last year and was named the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Pitcher of the Year. He was also named Athlete of the Year at Wilcox High School in 2007. Barraclough is a two-sport athlete who has earned seven letters at the varsity level in both football and baseball. He is a hard throwing right-handed pitcher who sits in the upper 80s to lower 90s with his fastball. He has great command of his slider and change up.
According to head coach Jedd Soto: "Kyle is a two-sport athlete with a bright future on the mound. He is the type of pitcher who commands the strike zone with all three pitches. With his stuff, he is an exciting player who can make an immediate impact in our rotation."
Nathan Gonzalez (Denair, CA) was named First Team All-Central California Conference selection as a junior at Pitman High School. He led his team with a 1.39 earned run average, 86 strikeouts and a 9-2 record. As a sophomore, he had a 1.22 earned run average, a perfect 10-0 record and 127 strikeouts. He was named Pitman's Rookie of the Year as a sophomore on varsity and Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. Gonzalez is another right-handed pitcher who throws in the low 90s and has exceptional feel for pitching. Gonzalez throws a lot of strikes and can beat hitters with his change up and curve ball.
According to head Coach Jedd Soto: "Nathan is one of the top right-handed pitchers in Northern California. He is very competitive and has a vast understanding of how to pitch. Nathan's presence and demeanor set him apart from other players. He should compete for a starting spot in our 2009 rotation."
Donald Collins (Fairfax, CA) is a two-sport athlete from Sir Francis Drake High School, earning six varsity letters in baseball and soccer. In 2006, Donald was the team's Most Valuable Player after posting a .397 batting average, a .683 slugging percentage, and hitting four home runs. He was also named the Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament Most Valuable Player after hitting .588, with four home runs and 10 runs batted in throughout the four games. Collins has been named to the All-Marin Catholic Athletic League team in both baseball and soccer.
According to head coach Jedd Soto: "Donald is an extremely fast, right handed hitter who makes solid contact and drives the ball to all fields. He has great baseball instincts and is a solid defensive player. He is another exciting athlete who plays multiple sports at the high school level and should be an exciting ball player to watch."
Soto's previous two classes have earned national recognition - the 2008 group received acknowledgment by Perfect Game in the notable category alongside some of the country's power programs in collegiate baseball. Perfect Game went on to commend the Gaels' new class for its strength in pitching prospects.
The 2007 class has already produced two Freshman All Americans in second baseman Randy Wells (Collegiate Baseball and Ping) and first base/left handed pitcher Anthony Aliotti (Collegiate Baseball, Rivals.com and Ping) last season.
