Postgame Quotes - No. 16/18 Saint Mary's 72, Portland 55
Quotes From Head Coach Randy Bennett, Jordan Ford And Calvin Hermanson
Head Coach Randy Bennett
Q: With Jock Landale only having four attempts on the night, was the game played out this way or was it by design?
Bennett: “It was definitely played out that way. We could have done a better job getting the ball to Jock, but Philipp [Hartwich] is a good defender. They helped off the guards, so there weren’t many places for Jock to go. I thought we did a good job of taking what they were giving us. Jock did a good job by keeping his composure.”
Q: Thoughts on the team’s defensive performance tonight...
Bennett: “Our defense was good and it showed a difference in this game. Usually we are very efficient offensively. Tonight our numbers were still pretty good, but we weren’t on our A game. Defensively we played well throughout the game, but we were not perfect. I thought Tanner [Krebs] did a nice job and so did Calvin [Hermanson]. Defense is what we are trying to get better at compared to what we were in December. That is our goal.”
Guard Jordan Ford
Q: You guys knew Jock would be facing serious pressure, what did you guys need to do?
Ford: “I think we knew that they were going to try and take Jock out of the game or one of our players because they’ve been doing a Box-and-1 offense in multiple games. We knew that one of our players was going to get iced out, but it opened up things for everyone else.”
Q: You guys have had 10, 12, 15 three-pointers before and always having Jock score 20 or 30 points a game. How nice is it to know that on a night where he only scores a few points that you guys are able to pick up the slack?
Ford: “Everyone on our team is a pretty good player and we know that some of us have to pick up the slack. Calvin can have a big game, I can have a big game or Emmett can dish out assists, so on any given night anybody can have a really good game.”
Q: Did you see something in their defense that made you want to be more aggressive in the first half or that allowed you to be more aggressive?
Ford: “I just think that their help defense was lacking a little bit. I was able to reject on-ball screens and get to the rack which opened everything up. I notice this in the beginning and it helped me get into the lane and finish.”
Q: You guys have done a good job about not talking about the streak and not making a big deal out of it. You guys got the school record, does it mean anything at all?
Ford: “Obviously we take some pride in that, but we have bigger goals that we want to accomplish. We just take it one game at a time and move on from there.”
Forward Calvin Hermanson
Q: Thoughts on tonight's game?
Hermanson: “It was a good time. All our guys were ready to play and the way they [Portland] were playing us defensively really opened up the perimeter. I credit Jock, he drew a lot of attention down there and all our guys were ready to play. We were knocking down shots, it got us off to a great start. We just tried to move the ball and find the most open guy. We found a lot of open guys to take the most open shot. We don’t try to take good shots, we try to take great shots.”
Q: Was it nice to take the scoring load off of Jock a bit?
Hermanson: “ I mean, I like it when he scores a lot so I don’t really care. As long as we’re winning, that's all that really matters. It doesn't matter who has a good game, that's kind of how we feel as a team. Jock could have a great night, Ford and I had a good night tonight, it could really be just anyone who steps up, and it just accredits to the depth of this team.”
Q: You guys have a 16-game streak, how does that feel?
Hermanson: “It feels good, we’re on a good roll right now, obviously coming off of a couple big wins. Up in Spokane was a pretty big win so we’re feeling good right now. But at the same time, we aren’t counting wins right now, we’re taking it one day at a time. We’re working on next week already and that’s where our hopes will be. It’s not one of the goals we put up on the board at the beginning of the year, again we’re trying to win a league title.”
Q: You come off a big, emotional win against Gonzaga, and it would be easy, and understandable if you guys suffered a let down, but you guys have come off strong. How important is it for the team to keep that kind of momentum going?
Hermanson: “Getting that win up there was obviously huge, but we’re trying to win a league title and any loss is the same as losing to Gonzaga. We have to approach every game like we are playing the best team in the league. They all matter the same and that’s our mindset going forward. It’s one game at a time and we just have to keep moving forward.”
