MBK | No. 11 Gaels Win 19th Straight as Naar Breaks Record

LOS ANGELES -- No. 11/12 Saint Mary's (24-2, 13-0 WCC) won its nation leading 19th straight, while senior Emmett Naar marked his name atop the record book for most assists in program history after leading the Gaels to the 83-62 win at Loyola Marymount (7-17, 2-11 WCC) Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Naar fueled the Gaels offense with 12 assists on the historic night. The guard now has 769 career assists, surpassing Matthew Dellavedova's longtime record of 768 career dimes. Naar found Evan Fitzner for the three-pointer with 4:48 left on the clock for his record-setting assist. 

  • Jordan Ford tied his career-high 20 points going an efficient 9-for-11 on the night. Jock Landale narrowly missed his 17th double-double of the season with 21 points and nine rebounds. The Gaels shot 64 percent from the field (32-for 50 FG) while limiting the Lions to shoot 44 percent on the night.

  • With the 70-53 advantage, Naar delivered his 768th career assist to Jordan Hunter for the thunderous alley-oop. Leading 57-45, Calvin Hermanson carried the Gaels over the next three possessions with a pair of free-throws and back-to-back from beyond the arc to give SMC the 18-point lead, 65-47. 

  • The Gaels jumped out to the 17-point lead with 15 minutes left in the game. SMC hit five consecutive field-goals, fueled by a fastbreak layup and drained trey by Ford. Saint Mary's defense kept the Lions attack at bay, forcing the home squad to go scoreless for three and half minutes. 

  • Saint Mary's got off to a fast start and led by as much as 14 points just 10 minutes into the game. The Gaels extended the lead to as much as 16 points in the opening half as the team shot 58 percent from the floor (15-for-26 FG). Landale and Ford each had had 13 points while Naar dished five assists. 

  • The Lions finished the half strong, cutting the deficit to just nine points heading into the locker rooms. LMU shot 43 percent (12-for-28 FG) and 4-for-10 from beyond the arc.
