Postgame Quotes — Saint Mary's 74 California 63
Gaels’ head coach Randy Bennett
Q: Opening Statement…
Bennett: “It was good basketball atmosphere tonight. I liked this game. I thought we played really well tonight. We defended a little better and a big key for us this game was to limit their guards, Don Coleman and Darius McNeill, and we did a pretty good job. We are really happy to get out with a win, we needed it as a team. We lost two in a row which hadn’t happened much in the last couple of years. It was key this team, we needed to go on the road in a tough place, tough situation, good team and find a way to get it done.”
Q: What did you get out of Jordan Ford and Tanner Krebs, who started and had 11 rebounds?
Bennett: “We are trying to get better defensively, so we adjusted personnel-wise. We think Tanner gives us that. We needed a good matchup on Coleman and we thought Tanner could give us that. Jordan played well. I think he has been growing as a player and into his role which is a pretty big role for us. We need him to score and did a good job on McNeill. Jordan did a super job defending him. I think that was the difference. We defended their guards pretty well.”
Q: Looking at the stat sheets at the end of the game, what do you mostly look at and judge to see where your team is doing well?
Bennett: “The two numbers I look at are field goal percentage and defense. I thought we were good defensively, we held them to 63 points and to plus four on the boards which is pretty good. Our goal is to be plus eight every night. Defensively and on the boards we are trying to get better and improve. We worked all week trying to get better and I thought we showed some growth there tonight."
Gaels’ forward Calvin Hermanson
Q: On the young guys’ performance tonight...
Hermanson: “Its big time for us. Jock [Landale], Emmett [Naar] and I are more experienced right now. I think this is one of our deeper teams. [Jordan] Ford did a great job tonight defensively and scoring the ball for us. We all have confidence in our bench to do well and our other role players, they have done great for us and were great for us tonight.”
Gaels’ guard Jordan Ford
Q: What did you see in Cal while driving to the hoop as much as you did in the second half?
Ford: “I saw that they were playing the pass when I would drive, so that opened it up for me to get the ball in the rim. We have so many good shooters with Calvin [Hermanson], Tanner [Krebs], and [Evan] Fitzner that can get on the rim and they can’t help in on us.”
