Postgame Quotes - Saint Mary's 70, Sacramento State 54

Dec. 4, 2017

Recap |  Final Stats

Saint Mary’s Head Coach Randy Bennett

Q: Overall impression on tonight’s game...
Bennett: “We were spotty, inconsistent. Some guys played well, but overall we were better defensively and on the boards. We struggled offensively, we didn't shoot it well. They played hard, but we didn't take care of the ball as well as we normally like to. Elijah Thomas did well for us off the bench. I thought Tanner played really well. Jock Landale obviously was outstanding, and so was Emmett Naar as he ran the show with eight assists and no turnovers.”

Q: Thoughts on the 3-point shooting tonight…
Bennett: “I thought most of Calvin’s shots were open. He didn't shoot it well, but he is going to have one of those nights. We are a good shooting team but some of the guys shots were not falling.”

Q: Strides on defensive performance tonight?
Bennett: “Strides, but not consistently. First half we were good, and the second half we were not so good. Our commitment to being good defensively and it is not where it needs to be. Tonight’s defensive effort was our best this year, so we will take it. We had a good half and then we had a bad half. We have to be able to put 40 minutes defensively together, with good effort and good decisions. It's a coach's job, I need to do a better job at getting these guys to understand what they are supposed to do and getting the right guys in the game to do it.”

Saint Mary’s Center Jock Landale

Q: Critiques on career-high (37 points, 18 rebounds)...
Landale: “Guys were finding me really easily and I was able to get my post game going. It was a great feeling. It was a good game but it wasn't a game I should have had. I had a terrible second half, I hurt the team a lot by turning the ball over. It was a good win but I have a few things to improve on.”

Q: Is it a good thing that the team is not satisfied after beating California and Sacramento State?
Landale: “I think it is a good thing. It is going to push us in the long run. One of our biggest problems right now is defense. Everyday we focus on that. A lot of that comes from playing hard and playing tough and being a bit greedier. We have to push our bad habits aside and really focus on our defense and rebounding the ball. Playing harder and tougher will help us in the long run.”
