Postgame Quotes - Saint Mary's 87, Loyola Marymount 59

Dec. 28, 2017

Recap |  Final Stats

Head Coach Randy Bennett

Q: Being listed as the “better team” what did tonight prove for the team?
Bennett: “We watched them on film and they are a tough team. They played everybody close. I was glad but surprised that we were able to separate early and keep it there. We played well and hit shots early.”

Q: Thoughts on the game as a whole…
Bennett: “In the second half we turned the ball over for a while up until the last five or six minutes of the game. For us, we were a little careless, but we did a good job defensively in the first half. Overall we were able to play some young guys who are good players and need some minutes. Jock Perry and Jordan Hunter played well, Elijah Thomas and Cullen Neal played good, Evan Fitzner was pretty solid. Good game, good minutes for them, onto BYU.”

Guard Emmett Naar
Q: I know sometimes Coach Bennett can find flaws when you guys win, but I’m guessing you didn’t find too many of those tonight.
Naar: “Not too many, just some turnovers got a bit sloppy for a little while there. They’re a good team, and I think we were pretty locked in from the start. I’m sure Coach is pretty happy.”

Q: When one team is perceived to be the better team, the thought is that the team has to get out early and not give the other team the thought that it can pull the upset. You guys did a pretty good job of jumping off early.
Naar: “Yes, especially at home. The more the team stays in it, the better. You get more and more confidence as the game goes on. To do the opposite you don’t try and put them away. Even with a team like that, they don’t stop fighting. The whole game we had to stay locked in because we knew at any point they could make a comeback.”

Q: You and the rest of the starters got some decent rest tonight with a short turn around for BYU on Saturday. How much of a benefit is that?
Naar: “That’s great. Playing that many minutes can get pretty taxing on the body and then having to fly is never easy. It’s good that our bench came in and did a great job today, which gave us a great lift.”

Forward Calvin Hermanson
Q: When one team is perceived to be the better team, the thought is that the team has to get out early and not give the other team the thought that it can pull the upset. That came true for you guys tonight, didn’t it?
Hermanson: “Ideally, we can do that every night. It’s not easy to do, but tonight was one of those nights. We came out hot, and shots were falling all over the place. That lead gave a great opportunity for some of our younger guys who need more experience and more minutes, so we’re happy for them. It was a great team win overall.”

Q: You and the rest of the starters got some decent rest tonight with a short turn around for BYU on Saturday. How much of a benefit is that?
Hermanson: “Definitely, a short rest is what we can use. Guys like Emmett, Jock, and I who play over thirty minutes a game really enjoy it. We’re looking to rest our bodies a bit and be fresh on Saturday.”

Q: The month of December has been pretty smooth for Saint Mary’s Basketball. What’s the difference from the first month of the season?
Hermanson: “We had a bit of a wake up call down in Anaheim when we dropped those two games. Coach has been on us all year long about our defense, and we’ve been trying to improve every time. I think we have had our best practices these past few weeks since Thanksgiving. We’ve taken another step up in this month of December, and I think you can see it on the court. We’ve had some better games, like Seattle, and that’s a good sign, so we’re looking to keep getting better.”
